Team History

The Chargers were founded by Barron Hilton in Los Angeles in 1959. Due to competition from the Los Angeles Rams, the team moved 120 miles south to San Diego in 1961. As part of the AFL, the Chargers enjoyed high-scoring years from 1961 to 1965, winning four AFL West titles and one AFL championship.

The 2000 season was the San Diego Chargers' 31st in the National Football League (NFL), their 41st overall and their second under head coach Mike Riley. The Chargers failed to improve on their 8–8 record from 1999, and finished the season 1–15, the worst record of any Chargers team in history.

Philip Rivers easily leads all Chargers quarterbacks in passing yards and touchdown passes. Dan Fouts thrived in the "Air Coryell" offense with six Pro Bowl selections. Stan Humphries guided the Chargers to their only Super Bowl appearance following the 1994 season.

Gillman's 87-57-6 record in 11 seasons in San Diego is easily the best in Chargers' history. Only one other long-term San Diego coach, Don Coryell, had a winning record. Coryell compiled a 72-60-0 record during his 1978-1986 tenure.

Dean Alexander Spanos (born May 26, 1950) is the chairman and owner of the National Football League (NFL)'s San Diego / Los Angeles Chargers franchise. He is the son of Alex Spanos, who purchased majority interest in the team in 1984.
