The Lakeland Terrier is a cheerful and affectionate dog that is playful and full of energy. They are alert and curious, love to dig and are known to bark a lot. As such they require plenty of activity and attention.

The Lakeland Terrier is an intelligent dog and has the ability to learn quickly. However this requires firm training and a strong leadership role from the dog owner as this breed has a very independent and stubborn streak. As such some previous experience with handling and training dogs is advisable.

The Lakeland Terrier requires plenty of exercise in secure areas. They are likely to show aggression towards other animals unless they have socialised with them at an early age. If they come across smaller animals they are likely to attack.

Lakeland Terriers are small and sturdy in appearance with a wiry, hard coat and a beard. The coat varies in colour from black, black/tan, reddish, red grizzle, wheat, blue, grizzle, and grizzle/tan. The weight of the Lakeland Terrier is around 17 pounds (7.7 kg.) for Dogs and 15 pounds (6.8 kg.) for Bitches. His height is not above 14½ inches (36.8 cm.)

Lakeland Terriers can be fairly high maintenance in terms of grooming and will need time dedicated to looking after them. They should be brushed once weekly and their beard should be cleaned daily. The coat should be clipped every few months.

Lakeland Terriers are generally a healthy breed but it is worth looking out for Legg-Perthes, elbow dysplasia, lens luxation, cataracts, thyroid problems, and vWD. The life expectancy of the Lakeland Terrier is around 12-16 years.

The parents of the Lakeland Terrier puppy should have OFA and CERF certificates.

The Lakeland Terrier originates from England, and is a cross between the Bedlington and the Old English Wirehaired Terrier. It was used to hunt den animals such as badger and fox, and also otter.
